Army cleans Batticaloa lagoon

The two days programme to attracting foreign and local tourists started yesterday (13) with the cleaning of the Batticaloa lagoon and other heritage sites of the town.

Thirty five Army personnel belonging to the Kallady 243rd brigade and the Singha Regiment at Kurukkalmadam under Brigadier Chandima Kumarasinghe and Major Ranil Balagalla participated in this cleaning campaign.

The overhanging branches of Gandhi Park were chopped off and sent to the Thiruperunthurai Solid Waste Management Centre. The banks of the lagoon were rid of rubbish and the vegetation pruned. Forty more personnel are to join the campaign today (14).
