The Election Commission announced that a total of 39 candidates who submitted their nominations yesterday morning (15) will contest the 2024 Presidential Election.

Out of the 40 candidates who placed their cash deposits to run for the Presidential Election, 39 submitted their nominations yesterday excluding the Independent candidate Sarath Kumara Gunaratne who placed his security bond on Wednesday (14), who was not present at the Election Commission office to submit his nominations, the Election Commission said. The Election Commission has received three objections following the acceptance of nominations during the time that was open to file objections against the candidates which was from 9 am to 11.30 am.

One objection was filed by Ven. Battaramulla Seelarathana Thera without specifically stating a particular candidate and two more objections have been filed against the former Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) Janaka Ratnayake by Oshala Herath and Nisansala Kumari.

Having considered the three objections filed against relevant candidates, the Election Commission members unanimously decided to reject all three objections according to the provisions of the Election Law. The Election Commission then announced that all the 39 candidates who submitted their nominations yesterday are eligible to contest for the 2024 Presidential Election. Out of the 39 candidates who will contest at the upcoming Presidential Election, 22 are from recognised political parties, 01 from other parties and 16 contesting as Independent candidates.

The candidates who will be contesting the 2024 Presidential Election which is scheduled for September 21 are: Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sarath Keerthiratne, Oshala Herath, A.S.P.Liyanage, Sajith Premadasa, P.W.S.K.Bandaranayaka, Dr.Wijeyedasa Rajapakshe, K.K.Piyadasa, Sirithunga Jayasuriya, Ajantha De Soyza, K. Ananda Kularathna, Sarath Manamendra, Ven. Battaramulle Seelarathana Thera, Ven. Akmeemana Dayarathana Thera, Siripala Amarasinghe, K.R.Krishan, Sarath Fonseka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Pani Wijesiriwardena, Antony Victor Perera, Ahidurus Muhammad Illyas, Marakkala Manage Pemasiri, Anura Sydney Jayaratne, D.M.Bandaranayaka, Priyantha Pushpakumara Wickramasinghe, M.Thilakaraja, J.D.K.Wickramaratne, Roshan Ranasinghe, Mahinda Dewage, Anoj De Silva, P. Ariyanethran, Muhammad Infas, Dilith Jayaweera, Nuwan Bopage, Namal Rajapaksha, Chaminda Anuruddha, Lakshman Namal Rajapaksa, Janaka Ratnayake and Lalith De Silva. The Election Commission stated that voting symbols will be assigned for each of the independent candidates contesting the 2024 Presidential election.
