MP Patali Champika Ranawaka, Leader of the United Republic Front, stated that the same individuals who dragged the country into its current crisis are once again holding rallies and attempting to mislead the public. He made these remarks while addressing the inaugural rally of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa at Sathyawadi Grounds in Kurunegala.
Ranawaka emphasised the importance of correctly identifying the forces that have wronged the people over the 76 years of political history in the country. He pointed out that the nation has suffered due to the corrupt, inefficient, and visionless individuals who have entered politics. These groups have attempted to change the country’s political landscape by inciting uprisings and unrest, establishing governments outside the democratic framework, and engaging in revolutionary actions that have led to the nation’s downfall.
Ranawaka highlighted that the country’s current debt stands at approximately Rs 37 billion. However, he asserted that the damages caused by the uprisings led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have cost the country five times that amount. He pointed to two main political streams that have harmed the country: the politics that have promoted the sale of drugs like ice, heroin, and ethanol to the nation’s youth, and the politics that have driven the country to the brink of destruction through violent revolutions and chaos.
Ranawaka urged the people to seize the historic opportunity on September 21 by voting for Sajith Premadasa and the SJB’s nation-building programme, which would allow them to simultaneously defeat both of these destructive political forces. He emphasised that this election represents a critical moment for the country to overcome the political elements that have dragged it into the abyss.
