President Ranil Wickremesinghe restored democracy from the political turmoil in this country – SLPP MP Udayakantha Gunathilaka

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Kegalle District MP Udayakantha Gunathilaka praised President Ranil Wickremesinghe, calling him the leader who restored democracy after the recent political turmoil in the country. Speaking at a public awareness meeting in Dedigama, Warakapola, Gunathilaka emphasised the need to grant President Wickremesinghe another five years to govern the country.

Gunathilaka reflected on the challenges faced by the country two years ago, stating, “Many have forgotten the queues, the pressure, and the death warrants we faced back then. Only President Ranil Wickremesinghe was able to rescue us from that situation. He protected democracy and gradually stabilised the country, step by step”.

He also noted the potential consequences if Parliament had been set on fire during the crisis. “Had Parliament been set ablaze, democracy would have been lost, and we wouldn’t have the freedom we have today to come together like this. The country was saved because of President Wickremesinghe’s decisive actions”.

Gunathilaka urged the public to unite and support the President’s leadership, stating, “We must respect the leader who saved the country at that critical moment. We must work together for his victory”. He also praised President Wickremesinghe’s successful negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, recalling how some said it would be impossible to secure a loan. “They said we couldn’t get the second installment, but President Wickremesinghe proved them wrong. He restructured the economy despite the challenges”.

Gunathilaka criticised the Opposition, particularly targeting Sajith Premadasa, describing him as the most hypocritical leader this country has ever seen. He accused Premadasa of misusing public funds without any legal framework and of treating national institutions like his personal property.

He also condemned the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) for the turmoil they caused in the country during 1971, 1988 and 1989. “The JVP brought immense suffering to our country, and they have never acknowledged the wrongs they committed. If they come to power again, they will only repeat those actions and act like in Bangladesh”.
