Kelani YMBA celebrates 66th Anniversary

The Kelani Young Men’s Buddhist Association (The Kelani YMBA) was established on 03.08.1958 under the name ‘Sri Kalyani Bauddha Samithiya’, (which was changed to ‘Kelani Young Men’s Buddhist Association’ with effect from 07.09.1958).

The Kelani YMBA was recognised by the State as a ‘Non-Profit Organisation’ with effect from 30.01.1959, and incorporated by the Kelani Young Men’s Buddhist Association Act, No. 19 of 1966 with effect from 22.06.1966. The objects of the Association include (a) providing facilities for, and foster the study and the propagation of the Buddha Dhamma; (b) encouraging the practical observance of the Buddha Dhamma; (c) promoting unity and co-operation among Buddhists; (d) advancement of the moral, cultural, physical and social welfare of Buddhists; and (e) promoting the interests of Buddhism.

The Association has been operating three Elders’ Homes (at Udupila, Weboda, and Imbulgoda) with contributions of the donors. Religious programmes including the Full Moon Poya day Programmes are conducted to enhance knowledge on Buddhism of the people in the area. The Kelani YMBA operates a modernised Public Library with the operational assistance of the Kelaniya University.

The Kelani YMBA implements special programmes to assist poor families, and pregnant women to provide vision-care services for needy people, and implement a blood donation campaign to mark its 66th Anniversary in August 2024.
