Harin appointed Presidential Advisor on Sports, Lands and Tourism

Former Minister Harin Fernando has been appointed as Presidential Advisor on Sports, Lands and Tourism.

This appointment has been made in accordance with the powers assigned to the President according to Article 41/1 of the Constitution.

Fernando, a Member of Parliament from Samagi Jana Balawegaya joined the Government to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe and later he held the Ministerial portfolio for Tourism, Lands, Sports and Youth Affairs.

However, with his decision to support the Government, the SJB banned his party membership and in a case file against the move, the Supreme Court decided that the steps taken by the SJB regarding Fernando’s party membership was legal and as a result, he lost his Parliament seat as well as the Ministerial position.
