With the emergence of a Tamil common candidate in the upcoming Presidential Election, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has become limited to the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) party.
The alliance, which once united several Tamil political parties under one banner, has seen these parties begin to operate independently, effectively leading to the coalition’s dissolution.
Two of the former TNA coalition partners, the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO) and the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) have pledged their support to the Tamil common candidate, former MP B.Ariyanethran.
TELO leader Selvam Adaikalanathan and PLOTE leader Dharmalingam Siddharthan have been actively campaigning with the Tamil common candidate across various locations, urging the public to support him.
The two leaders have organized public meetings throughout the Northern Province under the leadership of the Tamil common candidate. However, they have refrained from making statements against the TNA during their campaign.
At its inception, the TNA consisted of five major Tamil political parties.Today, the alliance is represented solely by the ITAK. The Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), led by former MP Anandasangaree, was the first to withdraw from the TNA. Later, the Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF), led by Suresh Premachandran, also departed from the alliance and began operating independently.
