When country reeled in a crisis, none would step up to lead us to stability, but Ranil… – MP Kokila Gunawardena
MP Kokila Gunawardena stated that the majority of voters in the country are women and they are determined to use their vote to ensure the victory of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
She made these remarks while addressing the “Puluwan Sri Lanka” press conference held on Monday (19) in Colombo.
She emphasised that women in the country faced significant difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic and the “Aragalaya” period. They struggled with issues such as prolonged power outages, queuing for petrol, and a shortage of gas. Even obtaining a decent meal was challenging for people living in flats. Gunawardena highlighted the hardships faced by flat residents, noting that she personally witnessed the difficulties they endured.
She stressed, “When the country faced a crisis, no one seemed willing to take responsibility for leading the country towards improvement. While the Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka declined the opportunity, Ranil Wickremesinghe was the only parliamentarian willing to risk his political career and take on the responsibility of supporting the people and steer the country out of a collapsed state.”
“President Wickremesinghe made necessary decisions. When he decided to increase the electricity bill, despite concerns raised about the impact on women, he told us that it was necessary to secure essential resources like fuels, gas, and medicines for the country. He promised that this increase would be temporary and that he would reduce the price as soon as possible, which he is currently working on.”
“Today, Sajith Premadasa and Anura Dissanayake are promising to reduce taxes under their government. I sometimes wonder whether Anura Kumara is in parliament or not. Before them, Ranil Wickremesinghe took steps to exempt Health, Education, and Essential aspects from VAT through parliament. The decision to increase taxes was made in order to cover the country’s daily expenses.”
