Families of fishers who died after drinking hazardous liquid seek relief

The children and wives of the four fishermen who had left Tangalle Fishery Harbour died after drinking hazardous liquid that seemed to be liquor in a bottle that was floating on the sea, met Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda at his Ministry last week.

The Minister inquired about their families and instructed the officials to take measures to prepare a Cabinet Paper to provide Rs. 500,000 each to an affected family in order to engage in self-employment as their livelihood. The Minister also instructed National Fishery Federation Secretary, Nelson Edirisinghe to take measures to grant compensation from life insurance policies and to explore the possibilities to provide financial assistance to the affected families from distress fund if they are members of Fishermen Societies.
