Smuggled pythons, crocs found from Wattala pet store

Four foreign pythons and a Sri Lankan crocodile, which had been illegally brought to Sri Lanka and kept in the loft of a pet store in Wattala area for sale, along with the owner and two employees of the store, have been arrested by the Wattala police yesterday (21).

Two male and two female pythons belonging to Bumble Bee, Spider Caliper and Banana species have been taken into custody by the police.Police suspect that they may have been smuggled in their luggage by air passengers and brought to Sri Lanka.

Police suspect that this crocodile may have been caught from a lake located in the dry zone of Sri Lanka and the Police took into their custody, these animals after they had been prepared to be sold at a price of over Rs.300,000 each.

Police have taken steps to send these animals to the Dehiwala Zoo and obtain a report on them, and these animals taken into custody yesterday (21) together with the owner of the pet shop and the employees are to be produced before the Wattala Magistrate’s Court.
