Enhanced educational opportunities for Sri Lankan teachers in Maldives
High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Maldives, Ranga Goonawardena held a meeting with Maldives’ Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu recently, to explore ways to deepen the educational collaboration between the two nations. The discussions underscored the importance of leveraging the shared history and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and the Maldives to foster mutual growth and understanding, particularly in the education sector.
The meeting focused on expanding opportunities for Sri Lankan teachers to contribute to the Maldivian education system. Over the years, Sri Lankan educators have played a crucial role in shaping the academic landscape of the Maldives, earning widespread respect and recognition for their dedication and expertise. Minister Shafeeu acknowledged this legacy, highlighting that many of the Maldives’ senior leaders and professionals were educated by Sri Lankan teachers. He expressed deep appreciation for the positive impact these teachers have had on the development of the nation.
However, Minister Shafeeu also conveyed his concern regarding the recent decline in the number of Sri Lankan teachers working in Maldivian schools. This trend, he noted, could diminish the strong educational ties between the two countries. The Minister emphasised the need to reverse this decline to ensure that future generations of Maldivian students can benefit from the high-quality education that Sri Lankan teachers are known to provide.
High Commissioner Goonewardene reiterated the commitment of the Sri Lankan Government in supporting the Maldivian education sector. He requested that the Maldivian Education Ministry consider increasing the recruitment of Sri Lankan teachers, recognising the potential benefits for both nations. The High Commissioner emphasised that such an initiative would not only address the current shortfall but also reinforce the longstanding bonds of friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
Beyond the recruitment of teachers, both parties discussed the broader context of educational collaboration. They explored the potential for establishing student exchange programmes that would allow young people from both countries to gain exposure to different educational environments, cultures, and perspectives. Such programmes, they agreed, could play a significant role in building lasting relationships and fostering mutual understanding between the next generation of Sri Lankans and Maldivians.
