The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to reduce the price of diesel and kerosene price by 25 rupees per litre to strengthen and encourage the livelihood of fishermen.

The government has taken this measure to normalise the country’s fisheries industry by minimizing the impact caused to the industry due to the economic crisis.

Considering the fact that the operation of a large number of fishing vessels has been halted and fishermen unable to bear the working capital which has been increased due to the escalation of fuel prices it has decided to provide relief for fishermen, Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardhana said.

He was speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday.

Minister Dr.Gunawardhana said that the Cabinet of Ministers has granted its consent to the joint proposal forwarded by the President in his capacity as the Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies Minister and the Fisheries Minister to grant an allowance of Rs.25 per diesel liter for fisheries vessels for six months that belong to owners utilising diesel as fuel and another Rs.25 per liter of kerosene for up to 25 days to the maximum per month for 15 liters per day to fishermen using kerosene for up to 25 days to the maximum per month for 15 liters per day to fishermen using kerosene as fuel as an “allowance to settle the fisheries industry.”
