New AT 378 paddy variety yields record 12 to 14 metric tonnes per hectare

The variety of paddy AT 378 introduced by the Ambalantota Paddy Research Institute (APRI) this year has recorded the highest yield of 12 to 14 metric tonnes of paddy per hectare, the research institute stated.

That amount of paddy is the highest yield ever produced in paddy cultivation in this country. The Ambalantota Paddy Research Institute pointed out that this type of paddy can yield 180 bushels per acre and 450 bushels per hectare. It has also been confirmed that the AT 378 paddy variety is resistant to flooding.

This variety of paddy is the result of a research conducted over 13 years and the weight of a bushel of paddy is 21 kg. The Ambalantota Paddy Research Institute states that this year, it was cultivated in Hambantota,

Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Matara, Galle and Ratnapura districts and the highest yield was obtained.

A large group of farmers who cultivated AT 378 paddy variety in Hambantota district, which is considered as a district with high potential for paddy cultivation, reported a yield of 12 to 14 metric tonnes of paddy per hectare to Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

Although the paddy farmers of Hambantota district are used to grow mostly red raw rice varieties, since most of the people in our country eat white raw rice varieties. Minister Amaraweera has given instructions that the AT 378 paddy variety should be popularized as a suitable variety of paddy for white raw rice cultivation in the southern province.
