Twelve countries invited to observe Presidential election

The Election Commission stated that representatives from 12 countries have been invited to observe the upcoming Presidential election.

Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L.Rathnayake said that representatives from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Maldives are among those that have been invited to observe the 2024 Presidential election that is scheduled to be held on September 21.

Election observers from the European Union have already arrived in the country to observe the Presidential election.

The Commonwealth election observers and representatives of the Asian Election Observation Network are also scheduled to visit Sri Lanka for Presidential election observation.

Meanwhile, according to the Election Commission, a total of 712,319 people have qualified for postal voting in the country from all the districts for the upcoming Presidential election with the highest number of 76,977 recorded from the Kurunegala district.

Kandy district came in second place with a total of 55,797 eligible for postal voting while Anuradhapura district took third place with 55,191 eligible to cast postal votes and Gampaha district in fourth place with 52,486 accepted postal votes with Badulla district coming in fifth place with a total of 42,061 accepted postal votes.

The rest of the districts and the number of accepted postal vote applications per respective district are as follows.

Colombo (District) – 27,195, Colombo (Urban) – 8441, Kalutara – 37,361, Matale – 21,667, Nuwara Eliya – 19,727, Galle – 41,436, Matara – 30,882, Hambantota – 22,167, Jaffna – 21,773, Kilinochchi – 3,656, Mannar – 4,098, Vavuniya – 5,725, Mulativu – 3,566, Batticaloa – 13,116, Ampara – 26,778, Trincomalee -14,964, Puttalam – 14,967, Polonnaruwa – 19,858, Monaragala- 24,797, Ratnapura – 32,530 and Kegalle – 35,103.
