Tourist arrivals reach 1.33 mn, revenue to touch USD 2 bn
Continuing the positive trend in tourism, Sri Lanka recorded 131,597 tourist arrivals from August 1 to 22, 2024 and this boosted up the total arrival figure to 1,329,656.
India was the top source market for Sri Lanka sending 25,086 tourists and taking 19.1% share. This was followed by the United Kingdom with 14,914 (11.3%) . It was also pleasing to note the increase in Chinese arrivals and becoming the third 9,257 (7.0%) slot for the first time in several years.
Italy was fourth best arrival destination for Sri Lanka (8,580) while Germany (8,396) and France (7,693) were fifth and sixth. Meanwhile, the revenue from tourism also moved up and by the end of July stood at USD 1,884 billion and was expected to touch the USD 2 billion figure in August. Earnings from the industry in July stood at USD 328.3 million.
Total revenue from January to June 2024 stood at 1,094 billion showing an increase of 77% so far.
