SLPP leaders said we should work with President Wickremesinghe two years back, we still standby that decision

Ranil Wickramasinghe was appointed as the President by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and he correctly fulfilled the responsibility given to him. So, the majority of SLPP will be with President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the forthcoming Presidential Election, said Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa.

He made these remarks while addressing a ‘Dinawamu Sri Lanka’ rally held in Hambantota.

He further stressed, “Now we are accused of leaving the SLPP. We never left SLPP. Two years ago, SLPP leaders said that they should protect President Ranil Wickremesinghe and work together for every decision taken in the Parliament. We are still by that decision.”

Adding to this, he mentioned that the country was driven into an economic crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a struggle for the people. However, there was a terrorist group that took advantage of the people’s struggle and tried to drive the country towards destruction.

In the end, their demand was for the government to resign and go home. As a result, the regime collapsed, and SLPP appointed Ranil Wickremesinghe as the President when other candidates like Sajith Premadasa, Sarath Fonseka, and Anura Kumara declined the offer.

The party decided to use our votes in parliament to elect Ranil Wickremesinghe as the President of the country, and we have supported this decision ever since. Over the past two years, we have worked with President Wickremesinghe to help stabilise the country for the benefit of the public.

He has fulfilled the duties required by the people of this country during these past two years.
