I am not going over to Opposition for any advantages, blessings, or benefits – MP Jagath K. Sumithraarachchi

Colombo District Member of Parliament Jagath Kumara Sumithraarachchi, who recently declared his support for the Presidential candidate of the Samagi Janabala Sandanaya and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, made a special statement in Parliament yesterday and took his seat in the Opposition benches.

In his statement, MP Jagath Kumara Sumithraarachchi explained the reasons why he decided to support the Presidential candidate of Samagi Janabala Sandhanaya.

After finishing the speech, he went to the Opposition and sat down.

I have been working as a member representing this parliament for four years. During that period, I raised many questions on behalf of the people. I also spoke on behalf of the Samurdhi beneficiaries.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, present Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and others helped me to come to Parliament.

Although I represented the ruling party, I always spoke for the suffering people. I spoke in this assembly about the suffering of the general public.

Every time I tried to solve the problems of Samurdhi officials. The most serious problem I had to face was seeing the paralyzing Samurdhi movement.

I believe some high ranking positions should have intervened to solve this problem. Attention was paid to the Aswesuma programme and not to the Samurdhi movement.

Large sum of money spent for the Aswesuma programme. Although money was allocated for that, they did not pay attention to Samurdhi beneficiaries.

This created problems even for disabled people. That issue was not resolved.

I thought that the President’s attention would be drawn to this. But even the officials of the Finance Ministry did not pay attention to this. As a result, the Samurdhi movement has reached the point of destruction. One hundred and ten thousand houses were created through the Samurdhi project.

I discussed this with the President and the Leader of the Opposition. Accordingly, I decided to make some political decisions. I have decided to support the Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa as a leader who always pays attention to the suffering people. I am not going to the Opposition for the sake of advantages, blessings, or benefits.
