The postal voting for the 2024 Presidential Election commenced yesterday (4) morning in all the districts of the country with a significant enthusiasm and turnout of public servants to cast their votes.
Postal voting was conducted in a peaceful manner with tight security provided by the Police at all District Secretariat offices, Election Secretariat offices, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) offices, Superintendent of Police (SP) and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) offices, Police Stations, Special Task Force (STF) camps, Special Police Units and VIP Security Divisions by the uniformed staff and civil servants attached to those offices.
Observers from the European Union (EU), People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) and the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) were present to monitor the postal voting around the country.
Casting the postal votes can be done today (5) and tomorrow (6) at the Tri-Forces Camps and at other government institutions by the uniformed staff and the civil servants attached to those offices.
Marking of postal votes can be done tomorrow (6) at the SDIG and DIG offices, SP and ASP offices, Police Stations, STF camps, Special Police Units and VIP Security Divisions by the uniformed staff and the civil servants attached to those offices.
Postal voters who were unable to cast their votes from September 4 to 6 can cast their votes on September 11 and 12 at the District Election Offices in the district where their workplace is located.
Meanwhile, Sunday, September 8 has been designated as a special day for the distribution of official polling cards by the Postal Department countrywide for the 2024 Presidential Election.
Deputy Postmaster General Rajitha Ranasinghe said that September 8 has been assigned as a special day for distribution of official polling cards as it is a public holiday and most people will be at home. The distribution of polling cards will take place from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm by the postal workers. He requested the residents to stay at home on that day to accept the polling cards.
The distribution of official polling cards for the 2024 Presidential Election which commenced on September 3 will end on September 14, he said.
The Election Commission has instructed the Postal Department to end the distribution of official polling cards on September 14, Ranasinghe said.
However, those who did not receive their polling cards by September 14 can visit their relevant post offices from which they receive their letters during working hours and collect their polling cards by confirming their identity using their signatures, he said.
