A new political alliance for the future will be launched today – Ramesh
Health and Industries Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said that the launch of a new political alliance which would mark a new turning point in Sri Lankan politics will be held today (5) at 9.00 am at the Water’s Edge Hotel with the participation of a large number of political party representatives and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
He emphasised that the alliance is being launched with the aim of starting a new political movement in a futuristic way.
He said this while attending a press conference held at Battaramulla yesterday (4).
Dr. Pathirana said as the Presidential Election campaign has started, their aim is to create stable political base.
“The people of this country were sceptical about the political stance to be taken by the majority of members of the SLPP, members of the provincial councils and members of the local government, in the future. A majority of those who worked with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) worked together with the SLPP in the past. All of them will work towards serving the Sri Lankan people by holding the same conservative political opinions, in the future.
“A political platform was essential for that. It was decided to build this broad alliance with the objective of creating that platform. In the upcoming elections, the aim is to work together with that group with similar ideas and policies as one group.
“As the battle for the Presidential Election has already commenced, our next goal is to build a long-term stable political base for us. A group of like-minded people have come together. In the future, those interested from the SLPP may join us. Everyone in this alliance is working to ensure the victory of the current President. This is a group of futurists. The democracy of some political parties has become chaotic. Therefore, our hope is to create a democratic political structure with modern populists.
“The Cabinet made a decision to cancel the old nominations for the local government elections to be held. The core of that decision is the fact that the election should be held according to the voter list of the year before the election. Under the current situation, if voting is held under the old nomination and old voting list, nearly 900,000 people will lose their right to vote. Like the right to vote, the youth community will also be deprived of contesting elections. It is a violation of human rights and a violation of democracy. Taking into consideration these matters, the Cabinet granted approval to amend the Act and cancel the election nominations.
“There is no legal obstacle for this.”
State Minister for Justice and Prison Affairs Anuradha Jayaratne said:
“A need of the common people of the country will be completed tomorrow. Building a new political force that can change the era of this country by the coming together of all nationalities is what is being done tomorrow. This will be the alliance that represents the majority of Parliamentarians and former local government representatives.”
State Minister for Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon said:
“Tomorrow is expected to mark the beginning of a strong unity that goes beyond this political framework. We are a group of politicians representing the new generation. A new political culture is being demanded in the country. There is a great opportunity for that. A number of political parties and the largest number of people representing the Parliament are with it. We have a responsibility to create a political environment that represents the people of the country. We will work to fulfill that responsibility tomorrow.”
