The government has been urged to “clean up and move forward” following a decisive move by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Reports indicate that the President has informed all ministers and Parliamentarians who are part of the government but do not support him in the upcoming Presidential Election to step down.
According to political sources, President Wickremesinghe made this decision after considering requests from several party organizations and ministers who support him. They argued that it is pointless for individuals who do not back the President at this critical juncture to remain in the government, as they are engaging in political manoeuvring by sharing their decisions with opposition factions.
As a result, those supporting the President have requested that he remove any dissenting members, allowing him the freedom to carry out his election campaign. Furthermore, it has been reported that the President dismissed four state ministers with immediate effect following these appeals.
Additionally, warnings have been issued to several other identified state ministers and members of parliament, advising them to make a decision rather than remain in the government without genuine support as the presidential election reaches a critical phase. Some of these state ministers have reportedly requested the opportunity to resign voluntarily rather than be removed from their positions.
