Relief programmes for those affected by current crises – AKD
National People’s Power (NPP) Presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that, if elected, he will dissolve Parliament within the first few days of his presidency and call for a General Election at the earliest opportunity.
He emphasised that his administration would prioritise establishing a stable government, creating a Parliament that truly reflects the will of the people, upholding the rule of law, and enforcing judicial orders. He also outlined plans to launch relief programmes for those affected by current crises and work towards cutting off a significant portion of agricultural debts.
Speaking at a rally in Galenbindunuwewa on Friday (6), Dissanayake expressed confidence that the NPP would secure victory in the upcoming presidential election.
He vowed to dissolve the Cabinet shortly after taking office and hold a General Election as soon as possible per the constitution.
His goal is to win the General Election and form an NPP-led government. He plans to restructure the cabinet, limiting it to a maximum of 25 ministers chosen for their expertise. Dissanayake highlighted the need for an efficient government by consolidating relevant sectors under the appropriate ministries. He criticised the current practice of dividing ministries, which he said leads to inefficiency and corruption, and cited examples from past governments.
Under an NPP government, Dissanayake stated, ministries like agriculture, land, irrigation, and natural resources would be merged and reorganised for better governance.
He strongly criticized dividing ministries for personal gain and vowed to eliminate such divisions. Additionally, he promised to abolish pensions for parliamentarians.
Dissanayake stated, “Our first Cabinet meeting would focus on decisions that benefit the nation. Our administration aims to make Sri Lanka self-sufficient, particularly through industrial growth and improving agriculture.
The government would provide farmers with proper guidance and resources, and accelerate projects like the Moragahakanda Reservoir to enable the country to produce enough food for three cultivation seasons. Depending on global prices for oil and fertiliser, the government would offer subsidies to support farmers and would intervene to ensure fair prices for crops after harvest.”
