Thailand – Sri Lanka Buddhist studies to expand

A senior Buddhist delegation from the Maha Chulalongkorn Raja Vidyalaya University in Aythya, Thailand agreed to establish strong links with universities in Sri Lanka to further strengthen close cooperation in Buddhist studies. A high-level delegation headed by Most Venerable Prof Phramha Surasak Nayake Thera, who is the Vice Rector of MCU held a discussion with Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena at the Temple Trees in Colombo today (Sept 12).

Ven Phramha Surasak Thera said the MCU has Buddhist History of Sri Lanka as a major subject of studies and it will have academic and student exchange programs with universities in Sri Lanka.

The Prime Minister invited the Thai Buddhists to join the proposed Mahavihara University project in Anuradhapura as it would undertake comprehensive archaeological work to excavate the ancient Mahavihara and establish the recreate the Mahavihara Temple and a university for Theravada Buddhist studies.

The Thai delegation recalled establishment of Theravada sect in Thailand by Most Venerable Sumana Thera from Sri Lanka during the reign of King Rama, and establishment of Siyam Nikaye in Sri Lanka by Most Venerable Upali Thera from Thailand.

The delegation included the Abbot of Chung Tai Chan Temple, Ven Kuo-Chiang Chen, Vice Director Ven Linghao Liang, Director of Dhammaduta Temple, Ven Pharmaha Prayoon Kamma, Dr Seng Hurng Narida, Ven Pharmaha Kosol Madee and Ven Wilgamuwe Ariyarathana Thera.

MP Yadamini Gunawardena, Secretary to the Prime Minister Anura Dissanayake and Advisor Sugeeswara Senadhira also took part in the discussion.
