JVP, FSP clash closes J’pura University

The Sri Jayewardenepura University was temporarily closed from 6 pm yesterday following a clash between two groups of students of the Janatha Vimukti Peramuna (JVP) and the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP).

It is reported that this clash had arisen due to a dispute between a group of students belonging to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna studying in the Management Faculty and a group of students belonging to the Frontline Socialist Party studying in the Arts Faculty.

It is reported that the attack was carried out with the aim of disrupting an art festival that was to be held in the university.

The University administration had officially informed all students to vacate the university premises by 6 pm yesterday.

University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pathmalal M.Mange said that in order to prevent the conflict from spreading further and to ensure the safety of the students, the administration decided to close the university and the holiday that was supposed to be given to the students next week was accordingly given from yesterday (12). He further said that the date of re-opening of the university will be announced after the situation is resolved and after the Presidential Election.
