Elpitiya PS election on October 26

The Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) election will be held on October 26, the Returning Officer in-charge of the Elpitiya PS coming under the Galle District said yesterday.

Acceptance of nominations at the Galle District Secretariat by the Returning Officer in-charge of the Elpitiya PS which commenced on September 9 ended at 12 noon yesterday (12), the Election Commission stated.

Nominations have been handed over by nine recognised political parties and two Independent groups.

Accordingly, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), National People’s Power (NPP), Janasetha Peramuna, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Podujana Eksath Peramuna, Sri Lanka Communist Party, United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), Jathika Janatha Pakshaya, Devana Parapura party and 02 Independent groups have placed cash deposits.

The Democratic People’s Congress, who placed the cash deposit for the Elpitiya PS election previously, has not submitted their nomination papers to contest.

55,643 votes have been registered for 17 constituencies for the Elpitiya PS election and voting will be held in 48 polling stations to elect 28 members for the Local Council. The number of candidates to be nominated is 17 for the first nomination paper and 14 for the supplementary nomination paper. The representation of women candidates is two for the first nomination paper and seven for the supplementary nomination paper.

The announcement of acceptance of nominations for the Elpitiya PS election was made public on August 26 by the Returning Officer in-charge of the Elpitiya PS of Galle district regarding the election of Chairman, Deputy Chairman and the members of the Local Council.

This was subsequent to the Election Commission officially announcing the holding of the Elpitiya PS election in 2024 without further delay after the upcoming Presidential Election. The term of the Elpitiya PS that was in effect from November 2019 ended on March 6, 2024 after the budget was defeated for the fourth consecutive time. According to the Provincial Council Act, a special Commissioner took over the Elpitiya PS and a special gazette extended the term of office for members until November 4, 2024.
