Refuting a statement made by NPP Presidential Candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake that the Sri Lanka Customs has an outstanding tax to be collected amounting to 1.1 trillion rupees, the Customs says it has only 58 billion rupees to be collected as outstanding tax.
The Customs states that apart from one private company related to the 58 billion rupees outstanding tax, the rest of the outstanding tax have to be collected from 37 public institutions.
According to the IMF, the expected revenue target of Sri Lanka Customs in 2024 is 1534 billion rupees.
But by the end of the first eight months of the year 2024, Sri Lanka Customs has managed to reach a revenue target of 1000 billion rupees, which is the highest revenue in history and the desired target for the year can be reached in the next four months, Sarath Nonis, Director General of Customs said.
Nonis said Sri Lanka Customs previously had the highest revenue record in history in 2023 collecting 975 billion rupees.
NPP presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake during a discussion hosted by a private television station on Monday said, Sri Lanka Customs has an outstanding tax of 1.1 trillion rupees.
