Ratnayake added that more than 71,000 public officials have been granted the opportunity to cast postal votes.“Among them, some have been assigned election duties. If a public officer fails to report for their designated duty, not only do they miss out on fulfilling that responsibility, but it also deprives another officer of the opportunity to serve”.

He added that the public officials are advised to ensure that they report for election duty if assigned. Those who fail to do so will face disciplinary action.

In addition, the Commissioner General requested private-sector employers and plantation managers to grant leave to private-sector employees and plantation workers to allow them to cast their votes.

Ratnayake emphasized that all private sector establishments should provide their employees with sufficient time off, in accordance with legal provisions, to exercise their voting rights. He highlighted that this is a constitutional obligation and that it is the responsibility of employers and managers to ensure that their staff are given the necessary leave.
