0 5

The Free Media Movement has announced in a press release that a number of decrees that have led to the restriction of freedom of speech and expression have been introduced and adopted in the past period, which are detrimental to the vitality of democracy.

The Free Media Movement requests the President through the press release, to pay attention to that and establish a democratic government by protecting the citizens rights to resist repression.

The press release signed by the Convener of the Free Media Movement Hana Ibrahim and Secretary Lasantha de Silva also states: Protecting citizens rights to resist repression is the foundation of strong democratic governance. This is an opportunity to congratulate Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the ninth Executive President of Sri Lanka, who was elected by popular vote, and it is the belief of the Free Media Movement that the future of the country will be decided on how he and the regime work.

During the past period, a number of decrees have been introduced and passed which lead to the restriction of the freedom of speech and expression of the people and thereby degrading the vitality of democracy. Chief among them are the Cybersecurity Act, the proposed Anti-Terrorism Act and the draft new labour laws. Other media and civil organisations as well as trade unions,

including the Free Media Movement, forced the abolishing of such repressive ordinances on many occasions, pointing out that they are a death blow to constitutional democracy, which includes freedom of speech and expression. They also engaged in judicial proceedings in that regard.
