EC provides solution for voters fearful of going to their registered polling centres to vote
The Election Commission (EC) stated that they have provided an option for voters who have reasonable fears of not getting the opportunity for them to cast their votes at their registered polling stations in the upcoming Parliamentary General Election.
In a statement issued by the EC, voters who have any fears that they may have challenges or obstacles in using their votes at their assigned registered polling centres have been advised that they can request to cast their votes at other polling centres that will be assigned at the sole discretion of the Election Commission.
The Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake stated that voters who have a reasonable fear that they may not be able to cast their votes at their registered polling centres due to the prevailing situations in those areas can request the Election Commissioner in writing to cast their ballots at a different polling station.
Those voters who are facing such situations will be required to submit their written requests together with their registered details in the 2024 voter registration list, within a week after the announcement calling nominations for the 2024 Parliamentary Election, which is on or before October 01, 2024.
The EC stated that such written requests by voters to allocate a different polling station to cast their ballots due to fears of visiting their registered polling centres must be made at the Election Commission’s Office at Sarana Mawatha in Rajagiriya or their relevant District Secretariat offices.
The required request forms can be obtained free from the area District Secretariat offices or district Election offices and can be also downloaded from the Election Commission’s website: www.elections.gov.lk.
The applicants must get their information mentioned in their applications certified as true by their local Grama Niladhari officers before submitting.
