The annual Army flag blessing religious ceremony, the precursor to the forthcoming Army Day (10 October) and its 75th Anniversary celebrations got underway this morning (27) at the most sacred Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya, headed by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu.

The day’s proceedings began with traditional Buddhist customs, where the Commander of the Army respectfully presented a tray of betel (dehet wattiya) and Atapirikara to the Atamasthanadhipathi (chief prelate), Dr. Most Reverend Pallegama Hemarathana Thero, as an invitation to initiate the religious offerings.

Army personnel carrying Army flags stood in the lower layer, while members of the Maha Sangha amidst the rhythmic sounds of ‘hevisi’ and ‘magul bera’, proceeded in a procession to the upper layer (Udamaluwa) to conduct the blessings. The chanting of Seth Pirith followed, invoking blessings for the Army’s 75th Anniversary.

The Chief of Staff, Senior Officers, and other dignitaries were present at this significant religious ceremony.
