SJB appoints Bakeer as Chairman, Kabir as General Secretary

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday made changes in the key Party positions following the defeat at the last Presidential Election.

Former Minister Imtiaz Bakeer Markar has been appointed as the Chairman of the party whilst former Kegalle District MP Kabir Hashim as the General Secretary.

Former Parliamentarian SJB Harshana Rajakaruna has been appointed for the post of Gampaha district chairman of SJB.

Bakeer Markar, who pioneered the United National Party Student’s Movement, began politics in 1970 and then in 1974, he became the President of the Inter-University Student Union of the United National Party (UNP). He was the President of the UNP Student’s Movement from 1975 to 1980 and in 1981, he was the General Secretary of it. He has 54 years experience as the General Secretary of the Lanka Youth Front, and as MP from 1988 to 2004.

Kabir Hashim is an economist. He is a former member of the Parliament representing the Kegalle District and former Minister of Highways, Higher Education and Investment Promotion. Kabir was formerly the General Secretary of the UNP.

Kabir was educated at Royal College Colombo and has obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree with honours from the Peradeniya University and was first elected as MP in 2001 and had the highest preferential votes in the Kegalle District in 2004. He also served as Minister of Higher Education under former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe’s Government from 2001 to 2004.Also, former Member of Parliament of SJB Harshana Rajakaruna has been appointed for the post of Gampaha district chairman of SJB. Harshana Rajakaruna was is a Member of Parliament from the UNP and the SJB and a former member of the Western Provincial Council.
