Tri-Forces services can be utilised for security of public even in absence of emergency – Defence Secretary
Defence Secretary Sampath Thuyakontha stated that even in the absence of an active state of emergency, the President has the authority to utilise the services of the Tri-Forces for the security of the public, depending on the prevailing conditions. He also said that certain groups have spread disinformation regarding the relevant gazette notification through social media.
The Defence Secretary emphasised that this has been a regular monthly process in recent times. During a media briefing in Kandy on Saturday (28), the Secretary made these remarks after paying respects to the Sacred Tooth Relic and receiving blessings following his assumption of duties. He further stated that the President has entrusted him with a significant responsibility, and he has begun his official duties with a clear understanding of the nature of this responsibility.
“We have identified all forms of threats to the national security of the country. Plans have been made under the guidance of the President to mitigate all unconventional threats that cause difficulties for the public. We will take necessary steps to enhance the capabilities of the Tri-Forces. It is essential to provide modern technology and training opportunities to elevate their professionalism. All existing factors will be identified, and actions will be taken accordingly. Discussions are expected with the leadership regarding the removal of Army camps in the North. The Air Force needs to be further equipped with modern technology, considering the economic situation of the country. There are many challenges faced by disabled war heroes within the Tri-Forces, and we are working to resolve these issues transparently.”
During his visit to the Malwatte Maha Vihara, the Defence Secretary also paid respects and received blessings from the Chief Prelate, Most Venerable Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera. The Chief Prelate remarked, “Although some people predicted unrest if Anura Kumara Dissanayake won the Presidential Election, no such violent incidents were reported. The current situation after the election should be understood by others as well. As poverty increases in the country, crime rates tend to rise.”
