The Chief Engineer of the Polgolla Reservoir, Thisara Bandara, reported that, despite the rain, the maintenance and operational activities on the gates were successfully completed after opening all the gates of the Polgolla Reservoir and releasing water to the Victoria Reservoir.

The maintenance work, which is being carried out after 2 years, is expected to cost the Mahaweli Authority Rs 3 million.

The opening of all the gates caused the Mahaweli River to drain up to Peradeniya, leading some people to venture into the drained areas to catch fish, despite warnings from the Mahaweli Authority not to do so.

“Approximately 150 officials and workers participated in these maintenance activities. Despite some disruptions caused by heavy rain, the work was successfully completed”, said Assistant Engineer P.U. Ranawira of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority.

He also mentioned that the Polgolla Reservoir, which has been in operation for about 50 years, is experiencing concrete erosion inside, and these repairs are being carried out to address that issue.

The Water Supply Board Announced that due to the maintenance work, there was a water-cut in several areas of the Kandy District, but supplies would resume as usual from today (30).
