Over 750 ex-servicemen engaged in criminal activities – Acting IGP

Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya said there is information that about 750 who left the armed forces and the Police are engaged in criminal activities.

He noted this when he called on the Chief Prelate of the Malwatte Chapter of the Siam Sect, the Most Venerable Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera in Kandy and received his blessings. He said that this information was revealed in an observation carried out some time ago that most of them are ex-servicemen of the Army.

He said that the Police continue to conduct operations to combat crime in a vigorous manner. He said the ‘Yukthiya’ operation launched during former IGP’s tenure had deployed officers of the entire Police Department for operation.

He said while rectifying the shortcomings in the implementation of the Yukthiya operation, the police will continue such operations to combat criminal and unlawful activities while fully adhering to the powers vested in the police through acts, decrees and regulations.

“The responsibility of protecting public life and property has been vested with the police. In the future, it has been planned to take necessary steps to carry out these activities more formally through the police stations islandwide,” he added.
