Former SJB MP Ajith Mannapperuma retracts his nomination for the Gampaha District
Former Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Ajith Mannapperuma, announced he would not contest in the upcoming General Election although his name is on the Gampaha District Nomination List.
During a media briefing, Mannapperuma explained that his decision stemmed from being removed from his position as the Gampaha District Organiser without prior discussion, only 24 hours after signing the Nomination papers.
Mannapperuma, who served as the Mayor of Gampaha for 9 years and as the Gampaha District Organiser of the SJB for 4 years, also represented the District in Parliament for 12 years. He has now been replaced as the Gampaha District Organiser by Waruna Rajapaksa.
He expressed his frustration, stating that someone who did not support Sajith Premadasa’s campaign during the last Presidential Election, but instead worked for Ranil Wickremesinghe’s campaign, was appointed to his position.
Criticising SJB leader Sajith Premadasa, Mannapperuma remarked that a true leader does not avoid answering calls and hide away.
He added that his decision to step away was because of the lack of leadership and the failure to have a proper discussion with him before making the change in District Organisers.
Furthermore, Mannapperuma apologised to the public for his role in supporting an unqualified and cowardly leader during the last Presidential Election, referring to the effort to elect such a person as President.
