One dead, 18 injured in Badalgama factory explosion

A boiler explosion at a carbon production factory in Badalgama yesterday morning (14) has left one person dead and 18 others with burn injuries, according to Badalgama Police.

Initial Police investigations revealed that the factory, which belongs to a large-scale industrial network, operates both day and night shifts. The explosion occurred at the end of the night shift.

The 18 injured individuals were admitted to the Negombo District General Hospital, where one of the critically injured succumbed to his injuries. The Police suspect that the boiler may have exploded due to excessive heat during the shift change.

Several of the injured are expected to be transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment.

Investigations into the incident are being conducted by Badalgama OIC Inspector Jayantha Pathirana, under the direction of Negombo Assistant Superintendent of Police Senarath Edirisinghe.
