Parents should be vigilant over their children’s behaviour – Dr. Rumy Ruben
Mental Health expert and Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Rumy Ruben yesterday paid special attention towards disobedient behaviour of certain young children in society, and said, watching unacceptable scenes in social media, visiting unnecessary websites in Google and watching certain local and foreign teledramas and films have seriously corrupted their minds.
Dr. Ruben made these remarks in response to a question by Media on certain children who are in the habit of committing suicide due to various reasons.
Dr. Ruden also focused attention towards two recent incidents where a 15-year-old schoolgirl committed suicide by jumping off the Lotus Tower and also another incident where a schoolgirl and a schoolboy also committed suicide by jumping off a high-rise building in Colombo, due to various social issues.
He said the parents of young children should keep a close tab on the movements of their children always, as it will immensely help to discourage children from visiting unnecessary friends and also unnecessary websites on the internet.
“Discussing with children on their day-to-day educational activities, their movements, encouraging the children to get engaged in sports activities, reading valuable publications and visiting educationally valuable websites in Google immensely help to rid them from their mental sufferings,” he said.
Dr. Ruben further said it is also the duty of parents to seek the assistance of medical doctors who are specialised in this field and also to get advice from Government hospitals countrywide.
