According to the Disaster Management Center, 158,391 people have been affected by the prevailing inclement weather.

Due to the turbulent nature of the atmosphere over the island, around 12 Districts have been affected by the rainy weather so far. As a result, floods occurred in many areas in the Districts of Colombo, Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Gampaha.

The highest rainfall of 126.1 mm in the past 24 hours was recorded from the Kalmunai area of Ampara.

The overflowing of the Kelani River flooded many nearby areas including Kelanimulla, Kaduwela, and the overflowing of the Attanagalu Oya flooded the Colombo-Kurunegala main road Ja-Ela Kotugoda intersection. However, the flood in Gampaha city is gradually receding.

Due to the overflowing of Kalu Ganga and Kuda Ganga, several roads in Kalutara District were flooded and many low-lying areas were affected due to which traffic was affected.

Also, due to the overflow of the Hamilton Canal, many areas including Natthandiya, Thummodara, Marawila and Puttalam were also flooded.

Meanwhile, the Met. Department said that a decrease in the rainfall over the island is expected in the next two days with clear weather conditions experienced in many areas yesterday in the morning hours, and the water is receding in many flooded areas.

Water levels continue to be high in Kaduwela and Kolonnawa areas in the Colombo District as well as Ja-Ela, Katana, Wattala and Biyagama areas of Gampaha District and the DMC said that relief efforts are ongoing for the affected people in those areas.

The residents of Ambatale point out that due to the water pumping station not functioning properly, there is a flood situation in the area as a result of the rise in the water level of the Kelani River which is leaking through the dam of the Ambatale water pumping station, causing the low-lying areas to be inundated.

The Irrigation Department also said that the flood risk status of the Attanagalu Oya, Kelani, Kalu and Ging River basins has decreased.

However, there is a possibility of heavy rains exceeding 100 mm taking place in several districts of the island today (16) as well, the DMC stated.

The Met. Department said that there may be occasional rain or thundershowers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-Western and Northern Provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Trincomalee Districts today.

Also, some places in the Eastern and Uva Provinces may experience rain or thundershowers in the evening or at night, according to the Met. Department.

The Met. Department said that in some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-West and Northern Provinces and Galle, Matara and Trincomalee districts heavy rains above 75 mm may occur.

As a low pressure area has also formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal, the Met. Department has informed mariners and fishing community not to sail in the sea area designated as risky until further notice.

The police have also informed the drivers to be careful while driving in foggy conditions.

Due to the prevailing rain situation, the landslide warning issued to the Districts of Colombo, Galle, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura are still in effect.
