The Election Commission has declared the authorised amount that can be spent per voter by a candidate, a political party or independent group and a candidate from the national list for the 2024 Parliamentary Elections.
Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake told Daily News yesterday (16) that a gazette has been issued stating the authorised amount of money which will be the maximum amount allocated by the Election Commission that can be spent during the election campaign per voter by a candidate, a political party or independent group and a candidate from the national list during the upcoming Parliamentary Elections. The Elections Commissioner General said that the authorised amount of money allocated by the Election Commission that can be spent per voter will vary and is different from district to district.
The Election Commission has taken into consideration the land area and population density of each district that the candidates have to cover to reach the voters during their election campaigns in deciding the maximum authorised amount of money that can be spent per voter. Accordingly, 60 percent of the total expenses that can be spent has been allocated for each candidate, 39.5 percent for each political party or independent group and 0.5 percent for each national list candidate by the Election Commission, the Election Commissioner General said.
The Election Commission further said that the preference numbers of the candidates contesting the 2024 Parliamentary Elections can be obtained from the respective District Secretariat offices.
