Batticaloa-Colombo train services disrupted after colliding with herd of elephants
The Railways Department said, train services on the Batticaloa-Colombo main line have been disrupted between Hingurakgoda and Gal Oya railway stations after a fuel train collided with a herd of elephants.
The department reported that, fuel train grassNo. 6493 – with the load, from Colombo to Batticaloa, derailed near the Minneriya railway station after colliding with a herd of elephants – two died.
As a result, train operations on the Eastern railway line have been disrupted. The incident occurred between the Minneriya and Higurakgoda railway stations when the train, en route from the Kolonnawa petroleum storage terminal to Batticaloa, struck a herd of wild elephants. .
Four fuel tanks of the train have been damaged, with two of them overturning due to the impact.
