Some trying to scuttle proper probe to hide truth
Some afraid of a thorough formal investigation
Two committees appointed by Ranil are not investigative committees
RW committee reports are not confidential
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday said the truth will be revealed to the people of this country after carrying out a fair investigation into the Easter Sunday attacks. Speaking at a National People’s Power election rally in Katunayake the President stressed conspirators have come out again to hide the real persons responsible to undermine this investigation when it is formally implemented.
“I assure you that it will not be allowed” he added.
The President further said special attention has been paid to the Easter attacks and the government has transformed the Police Department into a suitable department required for this investigation.
“We got a police without an Inspector General.
“We have appointed a very capable gentleman to the post of Inspector General. We have appointed a gentleman with an illustrious history as the Secretary to the Public Security Ministry. We have activated the institutional system to carry out these pending investigations in a formal manner. When we are doing these in a systematic manner some people have got worried about it”.
The President emphasised that people who used Easter attacks for petty political gain and those who spread racism to gain political power have ones again risen from their coma and asking to publicise various reports.
The President recalled the two reports that have come to the fore currently were done by commissions sanctioned by Ranil Wickremesinghe.
“One, Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed a committee to examine the videos shown on Channel-4. It is not an investigative committee. A committee was appointed and a report was given. The second one is to find out if there was any negligence on the part of the security forces during the Easter attack. Both are not investigative committees. They are Committees appointed by Ranil Wickremesinghe. Those reports were given to the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration”.
The President said he asked the former President’s Secretary what happened to those reports and he had replied that one report has been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security and the other report has been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security and the Secretary to the Archbishop’s Conference. The President stressed that none of these reports are confidential and they have been forwarded to the relevant institutions.
“We know that Ranil Wickremesinghe formed some committees because his desire was not to direct this investigation in the right direction, but to suppress it. With that desire, he created some committees”.
The President went on to say that in a very short time after the NPP came to power, the government instructed the Inspector General of Police and the CID to start a formal investigation into the Easter attack.
“Some have now woken from their coma. They are afraid of a formal investigation. They are trying to disrupt it and create a different social opinion to scuttle a proper probe” he added.
