Cardinal re-emphasises full probe into Easter Sunday attacks

Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith stated that he was not satisfied with the investigations and the reports conducted into the Easter Sunday attack and therefore a formal impartial and transparent investigation was required.

He emphasised the need for a formal investigation as there is a problem with the authenticity of the investigation committee reports related to the Easter attack. “Do a real investigation to find the mastermind behind this attack,” he said.

He also stated that these investigations should be based on three objectives. That is, who pushed these extremist Muslims to extremism? Who were the politicians and government officials who did not act on the Easter attack despite reporting the facts? and who financed this attack? He further noted that such facts should be revealed through the proper and transparent investigation. Speaking on the recent reveals of former MP Udaya Gammanpila regarding the Easter Sunday attack, he said that they believe that the people of this country are much smarter than Gammanpila thinks.

“We believe that they are able to understand what is the underlying purpose of this play by Udaya Gammanpila,” he added.

“Through the reports submitted by the unacceptable committees which we feel were appointed by the former President Ranil Wickremesinghe with ulterior motives and the futile performances of the likes of Udaya Gammanpila, they are unable to find out the truth behind the brutal Easter Sunday attack or to find the real criminals. It is our firm belief that there is no way to bring forward or thereby bring justice to the victims,” Rev.Father Cyril Gamini said.

Three days after former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was sworn in as President, then Criminal Investigation Department Director SSP Shani Abeysekera, who was in charge of the initial investigation on the Easter attack at that time, was transferred and then more than 20 investigating officers who were engaged in the investigation were also transferred. We urge to conduct investigations in an impartial, independent and transparent manner on certain gaps and dark spots in the Presidential Commission of Inquiry report. Carry out formal and transparent investigations on the information disclosed after the release of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry report and expose these big criminals and bring them to justice, justice and fairness for the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks. “The political culture of brutal killings that has been operating in this country for a long time has been completely changed. It is our hope to see the rule of law that has been destroyed in our beloved motherland be re-established, he said.

“We emphatically request all politicians and their allied officers to handover the investigation of other political killings to the Criminal Investigation Department and other relevant agencies and fulfil their responsibility,” he added.
