US Embassy issues warning for tourists in Arugam Bay

The US Embassy in Colombo yesterday advised its citizens to avoid the Arugam Bay area as the embassy has received credible information of warning of an attack targeting popular tourist locations in the area.

The embassy notice posted on the US Embassy website said the Embassy imposed a travel restriction on Embassy personnel for Arugam Bay effective immediately and until further notice due to the serious risk posed by this threat.

The embassy also urged its citizens to maintain vigilance and be aware of their surroundings and report all suspicious activity and emergencies to local authorities.

“Always have some form of communication on you (i.e.mobile phone) and monitor local media for news and updates”, the embassy said. The UK High Commission in Colombo also updated their travel advice for its citizens in the country based on the latest travel advisory regarding possible attack on Arugam Bay area.

The Russian Embassy in Colombo requested Russians nationals in Sri Lanka to be vigilant and avoid large gatherings.

The embassy said that following the official statement made by Sri Lanka Police regarding the possible threat of attacks against foreign tourists in Arugam Bay, the embassy alerted Russian nationals to be vigilant.
