President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the safety of all citizens in Sri Lanka has been assured. The President made these remarks while addressing a National People’s Power rally in Puttalam on Thursday (24).

Expressing further views, the President noted, “Currently, there is a conflict brewing in the world, with its winds sweeping across nations. Certain risks associated with this conflict have reached our country. About two weeks ago, reports indicated a potential incident here related to this global situation. We swiftly enhanced security in relevant areas. When intelligence reports arrive, we do not hold media discussions. Instead, we act responsibly according to the information received. Our duty is to ensure the safety of citizens, and immediate security was established in the necessary areas. Beyond that, we launched prompt investigations based on intelligence insights and succeeded in detaining several suspects. However, this was not publicized, nor were media briefings held.

“Our responsibility as a government is to prevent any dangerous incidents from occurring. If there is a threat to citizens, it is our duty to prevent it. Our predecessors failed by disregarding such information or causing unnecessary alarm through media leaks. We have acted without panic, ensuring the safety of the country’s citizens in an orderly manner. Throughout this process, we engaged in continuous discussions with police, intelligence services, and security sector officials, taking necessary measures to prevent any harm.

“Some may speculate that similar events are emerging globally and wonder if something akin has appeared in Sri Lanka. We do not take security steps on individual whims; we have taken comprehensive protective actions. This is the role of governance,” the President stated.
