ISIS active in SL – Dilum

Sarvajana Balaya Party National Organiser and Kandy District candidate for the Parliamentary Election, Dilum Amunugama stated that the ISIS network remains active within the country.

He noted that intelligence agencies had reported on this during his tenure as a State Minister.

While there may not be direct involvement in killings, Amunugama emphasised the importance of remaining vigilant about the covert operations of these networks.

Amunugama made these remarks during a media briefing held at a meeting of Sarvajana Balaya Party supporters at Queen’s Hotel, Kandy.

“This organisation is active in many countries around the world. If there is any threat, we must unite, setting aside party differences, to face it. The opposition’s role is not to seize power during moments when the government is under pressure. The opposition also holds a responsibility to safeguard the country. If the tourism industry collapses, the economy will be hit with a severe crisis,” Amunugama explained.

He further stated, “There is no more Sri Lanka Freedom Party today, and the UNP has fallen to the bottom. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) position will worsen after the General Election. The gas cylinder is a symbol that belonged to Ravi Karunanayake. The only party with a future in this country is the Sarvajana Balaya Party.

“A strong opposition is necessary to take charge if the country collapses. The actions of the opposition have significantly contributed to the crisis the country is moving toward over the past few decades. While opposition parties worldwide supported governing parties during the COVID-19 pandemic, the opposition here tried to hinder rather than assist. The practice of opposing a government from the day it takes power to bring it down must end. This country needs a responsible opposition. The people have entrusted a mandate to Anura Kumara Dissanayake. We must allow him the opportunity to govern. That’s why the Sarvajana Balaya Party is striving to build a strong opposition. If this administration fails, we need a good opposition ready to take charge.”

Amunugama also commented on the state of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP): “The SLPP has fallen into an irrecoverable abyss because Namal Rajapaksa ran for the presidency, disregarding the advice of Mahinda Rajapaksa and other senior party leaders. The crisis that unfolded under Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s rule cannot absolve the party’s ministers from accountability. By disregarding the majority’s decision not to field a candidate, Namal Rajapaksa destroyed the party by entering the presidential race. Had Namal heeded our advice and refrained from running, we could have revived the SLPP with support during this period when other parties were weakened. Now, however, the SLPP has crumbled beyond recovery. We cannot take responsibility for the current state of the SLPP, once backed by the support of 6.9 million people.”
