0 5

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the government will increase the salaries of state employees in the first budget presented by the National People’s Power.

He also said that government’s focus has been drawn on providing an allowance for the purchase of books to school children when the school holidays are given. He was speaking at the election rally to support NPP candidates contesting the upcoming General Election from Kandy.

“Government employees are not paid enough. In the first budget presented by the National People’s Power, the salaries of government employees will be increased. A person says he was planning to raise the wages of government employees and a Cabinet paper was submitted and the money was allocated.

Then it should have been given at that time. Why didn’t he give it?” the President said addressing the gathering.

President Dissanayake said the universities had to shut down for three months due to a strike by non-academic employees over salary increase issues, however the government then had not submitted and Cabinet papers and there was no money to support a salary increase.

“When public servants went on a number of strikes demanding a salary increase, those who said they had no money are now asking us to give a salary increase. Irrespective of their papers or the so-called allocating money, the National People’s Power government will definitely increase the salary of state sector workers in the next budget” he added.

The President said that even now, the current government is giving pensioners an additional allowance of 3000 rupees, the fertiliser subsidy for paddy farmers was increased to 25,000 rupees and fishermen were provided fuel subsidies.

The President stressed that the government has already made plans to take care of the people until the economy is built and the lives of the people are brought to a higher standard.
