Former President and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that he was the one who introduced laws to eliminate corruption and that the anti-corruption law was brought forward only after he became President. He added that it is not possible to combat corruption through laws alone.
He further emphasised that a second law regarding assets acquired through criminal activities has also been proposed, and Parliament should have been dissolved only after this law was approved.
He made these remarks while attending a rally in Kandy recently to support the victory of candidates from Kandy District under the New Democratic Front, who are contesting under the symbol of Gas Cylinder.
Additionally, former President Wickremesinghe stated:” The members who helped overcome challenges in Parliament, when I took on the country’s burdens as a lone representative, are now contesting the General Election under the Gas Cylinder symbol. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has remarked that the current issues in the country are due to the media, not the government. He pointed out that there are certain media outlets clinging to old dependencies.
The President invited them to discard their ‘dirty clothes’ and don democratic attire. But who really stands for democracy? It’s the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) that embraced democracy after leaving behind outdated practices. The media claimed that currency was printed and then when the media accused them of printing money, Minister Vijitha Herath denied it.”
