NPP can win Puttalam district – Prof. Chandana Abeyratne
Senior Professor Chandana Abeyaratne, leader of the National People’s Power (NPP) team for the Puttalam district, stated that a strong team has been fielded for the upcoming Parliamentary Election, covering all sectors.
He said that his party has presented a team with both professional knowledge and political experience, aiming to secure six seats from the Puttalam district, a feat they believe to be achievable without significant competition.
He was speaking at a public gathering in Puttalam.
Expanding on his views, Professor Abayaratne expressed confidence in their victory in this election, noting, “We have a solid chance to win in this election, with no doubt about it. Many prominent politicians from the Puttalam district are not contesting this time, as they have withdrawn rather than face rejection from the people. This allows us to send six candidates from our team to Parliament, and we are actively working towards that goal. Our focus is currently on the development of our district and addressing the needs of its people, as Puttalam is a region rich in resources.
“The coastline is vital for both the fishing and tourism industries, which could be utilized more productively. Although many tourists visiting Sri Lanka also travel to our district –such as the Kalpitiya tourism area and Wilpattu National Park, known for elephant sightings – the tourism sector here needs further development. In terms of tourist attractions, Puttalam has a wealth of scientifically significant sites, making it a district with great tourism potential.
“Additionally, Puttalam is an agricultural district, requiring the restoration of around 400 reservoirs. Such restoration efforts could generate income for approximately 20,000 farming families, and we must provide the necessary support for that. Numerous sectors in this district require development to meet the people’s food needs and to boost production. To achieve this, the irrigation sector must be enhanced.
“As a district in need of development, Puttalam has considerable areas for improvement in both education and healthcare. The education sector faces a significant setback due to a shortage of teachers and many deficiencies within the school system. We aim to address all these issues. Similarly, the healthcare sector is in a critical state. We plan to upgrade the Puttalam Base Hospital to the status of a district general hospital,” he said.
