National Democratic Front (NDF) Colombo district candidate Bhakti Dharmapriya Mendis said that no matter how many policies are documented to achieve the development goals of a country, corrupt politicians as well as corrupt officials are a big obstacle.
He emphasised that the country cannot develop with corrupt politicians and corrupt officials.
Mendis was speaking at a public meeting organised by the NDF in the Kottawa area yesterday (6).
He said that in order to take the country forward towards rapid development, it is necessary to make maximum use of available resources.
He emphasised that it was a tragedy to sell national resources under the guise of making maximum use or making profit from those resources as the former leaders who ruled the country did.
“Making profit and selling public resources are two different things,” he stressed.
“Our country has been an agricultural country since ancient times. But today, the farmers do not have a proper price for their products or crops. Consumers cannot buy products at a fair price. The country which was self-sufficient in rice in those days has now come to the situation of importing rice. The reason for this is exploitation by middlemen. The leaders had been turning a blind eye regarding these issues. This situation should be stopped immediately,” Mendis said.
“No matter how many qualified young people there are in this country, they do not have the opportunity to come out and help for the betterment of the country,” he further said.
“We need to encourage the educated, intelligent and skilled personnel in our country to carry out a more important mission for the country, society and the world. It is one of the main expectations of our party’s programme. But incompetent and inefficient officials cannot be used for that. It can only be done if the wheels of the state machinery are properly fixed and strong,” he noted.
