The Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka will encourage low-carbon emission, environment-friendly Industries aiming to protect the environment, said BOI Director General (DG) Renuka M. Weerakoone.
The BOI will provide knowledge and training to professionals to build low-carbon, environment-friendly Industries in the future and for the Factories currently in operation, into environment-friendly, green Industries.
This was revealed at the presentation of Research of a team that completed the internship of the BOI’s Environment Management Department (EMD) Industries, at the BOI Auditorium recently.
Several Investment Promotion Zones managed by the BOI have now adopted this change and transformation into green Industrial zones.
Industries under the purview of the BOI are currently in the process of upgrading the machinery used in their factories to minimise their carbon emissions into the environment, while BOI considers the approval only for the use of environment-friendly machineries for the Industries under the BOI, with proper guidance incorporated with Regulations.
The BOI’s EMDs have taken steps to provide internship training to the students of the Faculty of Technology, in collaboration with the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, to provide theoretical and practical knowledge to professionals entering the field of Environment Management.
A team comprising of BOI’s EMD Director Asanka Welagedara and Senior Lecturers of the Faculty of Technology of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, guided this internship of students to conduct their researches and obtain the related theory and practical knowledge in the Industrial sector, as external and internal supervisors, respectively.
The BOI DG Mrs. Renuka M. Weerakoone stated that the research, knowledge and concepts of these new professionals are more important for sustainable industrial development. She also emphasised that this knowledge shall also be incorporated for the BOI’s work, and that, it would be effective in providing such experiences to the professionals who will join in the future.
This Theoretical, Practical and Research training for the internship students focused on several detailed aspects that are highly relevant and significant to the Industrial sector in Sri Lanka.
During this conference, guidelines to assess industrial boiler fuels for sustainable boiler operations, development of green rating system for a sustainable industrial zone, calculation of water footprint for optimising the organic latex mattress manufacturing industry, enhancing the calorific value and palletisation of biologically treated sludge for sustainable energy production, assessing and reducing the Carbon footprint of organic rubber mattress manufacturing.
A comprehensive Life Cycle Analysis was presented by the internship students of the BOI’s EMD.
