Deadline set for Ex MPs, PC members and party leaders to return firearms
The Ministry of Defence has instructed for all firearms and ammunition that have been issued in the past to parliamentarians, provincial councilors, political party leaders, political organisations and executive grade civil servants by the Sri Lanka Police and the Army be returned.
The Defence Ministry in a statement said that the deadline to handover these firearms and ammunition is on or before December 30, 2024 to the nearest police station.
These firearms had been issued to the relevant parties previously for their personal safety and security by the Police and the Army.
Instructions have been given to all Officers in Charge (OICs) of police stations islandwide to check the details of people who hand over these firearms and ammunition in the name list of persons available with the Sri Lanka Police before taking them over.
The Defence Ministry further requested the holders of these firearms to assist the Sri Lanka Police in their inquiries regarding the return of firearms and ammunition in order to preserve law and order and further requested for those who have already returned their firearms and ammunition to the state to handover confirmation documents to police officers.
